10 Best Upright Cleaner Reviews

Vacuums are an indispensable part of cleaning, for most places. There are countless models on the market, all claiming to do the best job sucking up dust, food, and pet hair. Stick vacuums have grown in popularity because they are easy to handle and suited for cleaning carpets. Our upright vacuum cleaner reviews list is designed to help you pick the highest quality vacuum for your needs.

Upright Vacuum Cleaner Reviews | FAQs

Before we move on to our list of the best upright vacuum cleaners and reviews, we will take a moment to address some frequently asked questions on the subject.

1. What Is an Upright Vacuum?

Upright vacuums are one of the most commonly used household vacuum cleaners. They are designed with a foot lever that can be pressed to change the angle of the upright portion for movement.

They are also designed with bins or bags for the dirt they collect. Various attachments, including wands to reach corners and crevices, come with most models.

2. Can I Clean Wooden Floors With an Upright Vacuum Cleaner?

Yes, you can clean wooden floors with an upright vacuum cleaner, but it is advisable to deactivate the brush roll first. If you do not, you risk scratching the floors. If you want to clean wood floors, check if there is a way the roller can be deactivated before buying a new vacuum.

3. What Is Considered Lightweight for an Upright Vacuum?

Lightweight is a very subjective term. Most upright vacuums weigh between 12 pounds and 17 pounds but some are as heavy as 20 pounds. What is lightweight for you should be based on what you feel comfortable maneuvering with and the way you intend to use the unit, not just the manufacturer’s claims.

4. Can Upright Vacuum Cleaners Handle Pet Hair?

Not all upright vacuum cleaners are suited for sucking up pet hair. Pet hair poses unique challenges to a vacuum, including clogging and wrapping around the brush component. That said, there are some vacuums customized for the challenge.

5. What Is “Complete Seal” Technology?

Complete seal technology is a godsend for those who have allergies, asthma, or other such conditions. It means all air entering the vacuum is pushed directly toward the filter; none of the dusty air escapes. Where you find complete seal technology, you will normally find a HEPA-filtration system. The combination is ideal for combatting airborne pollutants.

6. What Is the Difference Between Bagged or Bagless Upright Vacuums?

Bagged and bagless vacuums all come with their unique benefits and challenges. Bagged options trap all the dirt and debris into a contained space that can be pulled out and chucked away with little mess.

The downside is you have to purchase and change the bags often. Bagless systems are slightly messier to empty but do not require the purchase of more products for debris. That said, bagless systems must be emptied more often.

7. What Should I Know About Vacuum Filtration Systems?

Filter systems in vacuums vary. The two main options are reusable filters or disposable filters. Disposable filters have to be replaced often, whilst reusable filters are washable, giving them the advantage of being used for longer periods of time.

It is worth noting HEPA-rated filters are rarely reusable. If the capture of 99.97% of all particles 0.3 microns in size or larger matters, you may have to deal with disposable filters.

Hoover T-Series WindTunnel

Hoover UH70120 T-Series WindTunnel Rewind Plus Upright Vacuum Cleaner,... Rewind

Features

The Hoover WindTunnel UH70120 gives us a bit of 70s nostalgia with its avocado-green exterior. Once you get past its somewhat time-consuming assembly, you will find it picks up everything from cereal and kitty litter to fine dust and silt. That said, it is not ideal for very low-pile carpets. A big bonus of this unit is its HEPA filtration system, although when you empty the bin, there will be some reintroduction of the captured dust into the environment.

We also like that this model is relatively quiet with an 88-dB rating. Unlike many other options on our upright vacuum cleaner reviews list, this model does not have a swiveling head. There is room on board for all the included attachments: pet hair brush, upholstery brush, wand, and nozzle. We always appreciate a vacuum that has a cord rewind. The UH70120’s cord rewind is activated by a foot lever. The power cord is a massive 27 feet.

The hose on this vacuum is long—a full 8 feet, so it can reach the highest places. There is also a red indicator light to let you know when the filter needs to be changed. Overall, this is one of our favorite units.

Pros

  • 27-foot retractable power cord
  • 8-foot stretch hose
  • 5-position adjustment
  • 2 filters, a standard washable filter, and a HEPA filter
  • 4 attachments: a crevice tool, upholstery brush, air-powered hand tool, and a 12-inch extension wand

Cons

  • Brush can’t be turned off
  • HEPA filters have to be replaced
  • The belt must be replaced once every 12 to 18 months
  • Messy to empty

Shark APEX

Shark APEX Upright Vacuum with DuoClean for Carpet and HardFloor...

Features

The Shark AZ1002 is a beast when it comes to cleaning. It has dual brush rolls and works better on bare floors than most of the other upright models featured on this upright vacuum cleaner reviews list. The front brush roll is soft and ideal for larger debris. While we appreciate the steering system, it can be hard to control on bare flooring or low-pile carpeting. This vacuum is heavier than some of our other featured models, so you may get a good workout using it.

A downside is that the various tools that come with the unit cannot all be stored on board at once. However, the lift-away function, where the dust canister and hose can be lifted away for detail cleaning, means you are almost getting two vacuums in one. The hose is short, so high drapery may be an issue. An extra-long power cord and HEPA filtration system make this vacuum a strong contender.

Pros

  • Powerful suction
  • HEPA filter and sealed system
  • LED lights on the nozzle and handle

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Short hose
  • Loud
  • Only 2 of the 3 tools fit on board

The Hoover Floormate Jet Cordless is run by the ONEPWR battery. It is an impressive wet/dry vacuum that features two tanks: one for clean water and one for dirty water and debris. Featuring a microfiber brush roll, it can be used on all hard flooring for wet and dry messes.

A single battery will do about one room, we recommend that you buy at least a second battery to do a serious cleaning day. It also does not have a HEPA filtration system. Nevertheless, this model is ideal if you are looking for a sturdy wet/dry vacuum cleaner.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Wet and dry settings

One thing we wished this unit had is a headlight. Also, the debris cup is a little smaller than some other options on this upright vacuum cleaner reviews list. However, its light size and powerful motor make this unit a strong contender.

Pros

  • HEPA filtration
  • Sealed system
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • No headlight
  • No swivel steering
  • Small cup size

The Verdict

We covered a lot of excellent vacuum models on our upright vacuum cleaner reviews list. A few models stand out from the pack. Perhaps one of our favorite models is the Hoover WindTunnel UH70120. It is a real beast, featuring almost every bell and whistle in the vacuum arsenal. It had one of the longest power cords, most extended hose, and greatest selection of attachments, with room to store them.

It was also fully contained with a HEPA filtration system. However, what pushed this model over the top was the indicator light for the filter. We feel that was serious attention to detail we have not seen elsewhere.

Another honorable mention is The Oreck XL. It is the only professional-grade vacuum cleaner on our list. It is also the most lightweight, at an amazing eight pounds. That is legitimately amazing for an upright vacuum, especially one that is professional grade.

We would be remiss if we ignored the only we/dry vacuum cleaner on our list; the Hoover Floormate Deluxe mixes the strength of our favorite pick with an allergy-friendly HEPA filtration system and the ability to shampoo carpet and upholstery. We will forgive the model’s few oversights for the versatility and low price.

Picking the right vacuum cleaner is an investment in your home’s sanitation and your health. We hope you found our upright vacuum cleaner reviews list useful. We aimed to make you feel more informed about your options and the wide variety of models on the market. There is bound to be one model on the list ideal for you and your unique needs.
